Thanksgiving Day Stretches for Overeaters

Don't tell my yoga instructor, but my favorite thing about Thanksgiving is overeating. Many yogis think they must hold back on Thanksgiving, that they musn't stuff their face until it turns blue. That a double full stomach will somehow impede their yoga practice. I am here to tell you that that couldn't be farther from the truth! On the contrary, yoga can actually stretch your stomach to allow you to eat more and later it can relieve the pain of overeating. You just need to follow these special Thanksgiving Day yoga poses.

1. The Turkey: This is the "sun salutation" of T-day poses. It's a great, dynamic warmup. Simply flap your arms up and down and run around in a circle aimlessly. Can be accompanied with the mouth warm-up of "gobble gobble gobble."

2. The Green Bean Casserole: In this pose you mimic the natural cooking process of green bean casserole. Start by standing up straight (mountain pose) as your are the stalk. Then fall to the ground and shake. This represents the green beans being chopped. Next make long fluid motions with your full body (the mystery sauce) and end in short static motions (the fried onion topping). Pose may be altered to your family recipe.

3. The Mashed Potato: Simply mimic the 1950s dance called the Mashed Potato.

4. The Cranberry Sauce: Another highly dynamic pose. Start in small ball as tight as possible. Then explode out and fall to the ground with your limbs as spread out as possible. This represents the cranberry becoming sauce.

5. Pumpkin Pie: Start with cat and cow pose as this represents the pumpkin. Then spin around in circles as fast as you can because my mom puts the pumpkin in a beater. Actually, she uses canned pumpkin. Does anybody know a pose for can food? Oh forget it, you're on your own for this one.

Have a very Happy Thanksgiving, dear readers of this blog! And I'm very thankful for your sense of humor because none of the above poses are real.

  1. This is amazing. Would you mind if I link to it in my blog The Joy of Yoga? It's a bit late, but 'tis the season for overeating.

    Cheers!
