Every day, I write on my novel in a classic spiral notebook for about 30 minutes. Flipping through the pages, I discovered a curious pattern: On the days that I did yoga (or exercise) before writing, my entries were double the length than on days that I was a couch potato. Furthermore, on those yoga days, writing was easier and more fun. It flowed from me like one of those wonderful yoga sighs. On the couch potato days, writing was a struggle.
My theory is that the '0l mind-body duality isn't as dual as we think. What's good for the gander is good for the goose, and all that. (Though I don't know what a gander is.) Additionally, since yoga calms anxiety, I think it also allows you to release the worries that cause writer's block (or any other blocks).
What do you think? Is this true to your yoga experience? Do you have any stories where you have found yourself surprisingly more capable/patient/happy/giving/calm/etc. after doing yoga?
Yes definitely yoga is the best and most time-tested path to physical and mental well-being known to mankind. While some people think of yoga simply as physical exercise, it is actually a complete system for overall health and well-being. It includes everything from physical postures, personal hygiene, and a healthy diet to premeditation, breathing, and relaxation techniques.

Personal hygiene—I'm still working on that one!
ReplyDeleteI really like the Kundalini philosophy (this may be found other places as well) where each nostril is connected to nadis that run up and down the spine crisscrossing at each chakra. when your chakras are clear and these nadis are flowing freely, your nostrils flow strongly and equally, bringing equal amounts of oxygen to each side of the brain. It is rare that your brain gets this balanced love, but it makes sense that when these nadis flow more, due to yoga or whatever else, that your brain functions more clearly as well!
ReplyDeleteDue to allergies, it seems like one or the other of my nostrils is always stuffed up. Wonder what that means for my brain and yoga alignment.
